My Visit to the Most Haunted House in America

By RedHotMujer7

The other day we visited the infamous Whaley house in Old Town San Diego, CA. According to The Travel Channel, they are listed as the #1 haunted place in the U.S.

They are open 6 days a week (closed Wednesdays) from 10am to 5pm, for the $6 admission self guided tour. They also offer guided tours, on weekend evenings, with the employees dressed in full period costume both day and evening. We went on a Monday afternoon, so our only availabilty was the self guided tour. Although the nighttime tour might have upped the spookiness factora bit, we were still entertained, and plan to go back. It is an interesting tour, whether self guided or not, and a great place to check out if you're in San Diego for the day. Many of the rooms are behind glass, so as not to disturb the historical pieces and antiques, but I still found myself trying to stretch my hand way out above the glass to get a good picture.

We had forgotten our camera in the car, so these pictures were all taken by my cell phone, an LG Envy 2. I hope you enjoy, and let me know what you think!

The Whaley children's bedroom. Some of the original toys that the Whaley children used to play with can be seen on the floor. That doll on the far left looks realistically freaky, doesn't it?

Front parlor. Thomas's wife, Anna Whaley loved to play musical instruments, and is thought to have spent a lot of time in this room. A picture of her is hung on the right above the piano.

Staircase of the Whaley house. Narrow and steep, one had to walk carefully up and down. The creaky stairs proved spooky even during the day. Near the top of the stairs, I felt a blast of cold air, as though walking under an AC vent.

This is a picture I took of a photo of...darn it, I don't remember who. The windowless room wasn't spectacular, but see if you can spot the difference in the next photo.

This photo was taken 20 seconds after the previous one. The two small lines of light were not visible when I took the picture.

I thought this was a cool picture. With the sun setting through the window, this picture looked exactly like it did in person. This photo was taken at the entryway of the dining room.

This photo is just like the previous, taken just 10 seconds earlier. I noticed a red blur to the left of the window, and thought it looked interesting. Professional and amateur photographers alike can probably explain this to me.

Did you know that the Whaley house was also the location of the first courthouse in the area? It is said that the notorious "Yankee Jim" Robinson, was tried, convicted, and hanged here.

A display case of antiques, including a 1600 A.D. French coin that was found near the property, and the family's original blue and white china pattern set. It is pictured on the left, still in impeccable condition.

In addition to being a courthouse, the Whaley House also served as the local live theatre. The small stage slopes downward, allowing the actors to "better project their voices," according to the employees here.
